The BP Spill Specifics

As one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history, the gulf oil spill made its mark. A few days after the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and sinking oil rig , underwater cameras revealed a gas and oil leak.  It took 87 days to cap the well and by that time, on July 1, 2010, an estimated 3.1 million barrels (or 130 million gallons) of oil had spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.  Eleven people lost their lives due to the explosion and sinking rig, and hundreds of thousands of  Gulf Coast residents and businesses of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas were financially impacted and the wildlife ecosystem was fatally damaged.

But Actually How Bad Was The Spill?

During the first weeks of the spill, much of the focus was placed on capping the well and stopping the flow of oil.  First responders and emergency crews were at a loss to say how bad the situation actually was.  Much depended on how the oil and water currents mixed. A decade later, studies of the fatally damaged ecosystem continue. Tens of thousands of residents and businesses were economically impacted by the BP Oil Spill, so much so that a class action settlement was reached to provide compensation for Gulf Coast residents and businesses.
